Chloe Obolensky

Biography

Chloe Obolensky designs sets and costumes for theater, opera and film.

Of greek nationality she was educated in England and France and began working in the theater as assistant to Lila de Nobili and Yannis Tsarouchis.

Her long standing collaboration with Peter Brook includes sets and costumes for The Cherry Orchard followed by Carmen, The Mahabharata (stage and film), Pelleas and Melisande, The Tempest and others. She frequently designs for Opera and notable collaborations include projects such as Othello (costumes) directed by Ermano Olmi for Salzburg Easter Festival, Don Giovani at the Festival d’Aix en Provence (Peter Brook), Dido and Aeneas sets and costumes at ENO-London and Opera Comique in Paris, Death in Venice at ENO, Theatre de la La Monnaie, Brussels, La Scala, where she was awarded the Abbiati Prize for costume, Eugene Onegin (costumes) at ENO and The Metropolitan Opera, Fidelio sets and costumes at La Scala, inaugurating the 2015 season, all directed by Deborah Warner.

Designing costumes for Dame de Pique marked her first artistic collaboration with Lev Dodin followed by A. Tchekhov’s The Sea Gull (costumes) at the Malyi Theater and Demon (costumes) in Paris. Amongst other distinctions, she was awarded The Moliere Prize for Costume in 2000 for her work with Alfredo Arias, and The Menander Award (sets and costumes) following her work with Leftheris Voyadzis at Epidaurus.

Her book The Russian Empire — A Portrait in Photographs has been published by Random House in the USA, as well as in England, France and Germany.
