Biography
Born in Athens in 1972. He studied violin and music theory and, subsequently, classical singing at the Greek Conservatory and at the Athenaeum Conservatory. In 1987, he began his studies in
orchestral conducting under maestro George Hadjinikos. In 1994-99, he studied conducting at the State conservatory of St. Petersburg, under the tutelage of Professor Ilya Musin.
In 1999, he was appointed Assistant of Yuri Temirkanov at the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2001, he participated in production of Falstaff at the Moscow’s
Helikon-Opera, where he also conducted Aida.
At the Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre
Since 2004, he has been Music Director and Principal Conductor of the Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre, where he was music director of the following opera productions: Aida
(director Dmitri Tcherniakov, 2004), Le Nozze di Figaro (director Tatjana Gurbaca, 2006), The Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (director Henryk Baranowski, 2006), Don Carlo (concert
performance, 2008), Macbeth (Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre and Paris National Opera co-production, director Dmitri Tcherniakov, 2008), Haydn’s L'anima del filosofo, ossia
Orfeo ed Euridice (Russian premiere, concert performance, 2009); and ballet productions: Stravinsky’s Le Baiser de la Fee (choreographer Alla Sigalova, 2003),
Cinderella (choreographer Kirill Simonov, 2006).
In 2004, he founded the Musica Aeterna Ensemble and the New Siberian Singers Chamber Choir.
He collaborated with St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra of the Mariynsky Theatre, Russian National Orchestra, Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra, Novaya
Rossia Symphony Orchestra, Russian National Philharmonic Orchestra, Moscow Virtuosi State Chamber Orchestra, Moscow’s Chamber Orchestra Musica Viva, Greek National Orchestra,
Sofia and Cleveland Festival Orchestras, Stuttgart Symphony Orchestra.
Teodor Currentzis appeared at the festivals in Colmar, Bangkok, London, Ludwigsburg, Loccum and Miami.
In 2008, he made his Paris Opera debut conducting Verdi's Don Carlo.
Since 2006, he has been one of the Art Directors of the Territory Modern Art Festival in Moscow.
Since 2009/10 season - Bolshoi Theatre Conductor in Residence.
In 2009, he was music director of the production of Berg's Wozzeck (director Dmitri Tcherniakov). In
2010, - music director of the production of Mozart's Don Giovanni (director Dmitri Tcherniakov).
Since 2011, he has been the Perm Theatre of Opera and Ballet Artistic Director.
Awards
A recipient of The Golden Mask National Theatre prize Special Awards for Cinderella at the Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre (2007) and Le Nozze di Figaro at the
Novosibirsk State Opera and Ballet Theatre (2008). In 2011 he received The Golden Mask as best conductor for Wozzeck at the Bolshoi Theatre.
