Awards
He is the British Scenography Commissioner to OISTAT (Organisation Internationale des Scenografes, Techniciens et Architects de Theatre) and a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI).
In 1988 he was awarded a Laurence Olivier Award and Critics Circle Theatre Award for the season at the Old Vic.
His set designs for The Lion King have won numerous awards including Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award in 1998, the Critics Circle Theatre Award in 1999, and both the Ovations Award and the Hollywood NAACP Award for Best Set Design in 2001.

Biography
Hudson studied at Wimbledon School of Art. He has designed sets and costumes for opera companies including English National Opera, Glyndebourne, La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Paris Opéra, Vienna State Opera, Dutch National Opera, Zürich Opera, La Fenice, Venice, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington National Opera and for Bregenz Festival. His many collaborations with Vick include Der Ring des Nibelungen (Teatro Massimo, Palermo), The Makropulos Affair (Maryinsky Theatre), Eugene Onegin (Glyndebourne) and Die Entführung aus dem Serail (Rome). He has also worked with directors including David Pountney (La forza del destino), Stephen Langridge (Rigoletto), Andrei Serban (Khovanshchina, Les Contes d’Hoffmann) and Yoshi Oïda (costume designs for Peter Grimes, Les Pêcheurs de perles and Death in Venice).Zimbabwean stage designer Richard Hudson made his Royal Opera debut in 1993 on Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, directed by Graham Vick. He has returned to work on The Merry Widow, Tamerlano and the world premiere of Morgen und Abend for The Royal Opera (both with Vick), on Kim Brandstrup’s Rushes – Fragments of a Lost Story and Invitus Invitam for The Royal Ballet, and Brandstrup’s Goldberg – the Brandstrup-Rojo Project for ROH2.
He designed sets and costumes for several ballets created by Alexei Ratmansky, such as Dumbarton, The Nutcracker, The Sleeping Beauty (ABT) and The Golden Cockerel (Royal Danish Ballet, 2012; ABT, 2016).
He has designed sets and costumes for the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal National Theatre, the Young Vic and The Gate, London.
He was set designer for the famous The Lion King.
